The Flowers of October —
Gladiolus: Strength of character, Faithfulness, Remembrance
Cypress: Death, Mourning
Marigold: Grief (+ Willow: Sorrow for loss of loved one)
Hemlock: Death, Paralysis (+ Nettle: Loved one gone too soon)
Pansy: Thought, Remembrance, Love
Olive: Peace

Here, a bed is made for the weight of loss to rest without rush. The willow’s leaves become the tears that scatter sorrow through the gloomy skies, allowing its echoes of lost love to fall upon the Garden’s soft ground. Every petal that holds onto its withering life becomes a blanket of lament for grief to find shelter under. The comfort of this quiet space is not one of hollowness. It is somehow a place of remembrance for all the blooming that once was, a place for weeping and naming what’s been taken too soon, and a place of surrender for the stripping of breath that Autumn inevitably brings. The Gardener walks among the mourning flowers, nursing what appears lifeless and paralyzed. Every ounce of pain and longing is honored; never belittled or forgotten. And yet, it is not all-consuming, either. Grace enters in like a harvesting of hope under a new morning sun, inviting the flowers to gather its worthy gifts – of strength that surpasses understanding, of memories that lighten the heart, and of the Gardener’s love that promises this land will not with death. Here, the Garden grieves honestly and gathers grace generously, as sorrow and hope share the same soil.
